Setting up DNS records

2 min read

When it comes to being able to send emails through Releva as part of your Remarketing strategy, you’ll need to create a few DNS records in the DNS settings of your domain.

Beginning #

Here’s few of the more popular domain providers and where to find their DNS settings:

First steps #

Before you jump into creating the records, it’s recommended to set your Email Sender Address in Releva. The entered domain here will dictate the values of the records needed to be created.

To set these, navigate to Settings on the left-side menu and select Messaging from the options as shown on the image below:

Once on the page, make sure to check both Email addresses:

  1. Email Sender Address – this is the email address that will be used to send messages from via Releva.
  2. Email Reply-to Address – this is the email that will be used when someone decides to reply to an email send via Releva. It’s recommended for this email to be real so the users won’t receive an error message if and when they reply to an email.

In order to minimize the chance of an email going to Spam, we highly recommend both email are the same. Neither of them should be Gmail, Yahoo or any other default email provider.

Accessing the necessary records #

Once you have set the proper Emails addresses for Send and Reply-to, it’s time to check the records that need to be created. While on the same page, click on the details… link below the ‘Email Sender Email’ field as shown on the image below:

Doing so will open a pop-up window containing all records that need to be created. Copy and create them one by one.

Here it’s important to mention that the first record is the one containing the SPF value. The one you see in the pop-up contains both ours and your so all you need to do is replace the existing SPF value with the one from the pop-up.

Here’s an example:

  • Old value – v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all
  • Value from pop-up – v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com include:amazon.com include:releva.ai ~all
  • Action required – replace old value with the new from the pop-up

There should never be two SPF records for a domain as that will increase the chance of your emails to go to Spam and the campaigns and automations from not trig

chance of your emails to go to Spam and the campaigns and automations from not triggering.

Additional records that are necessary #

DMARC record #

A requirement for some time now is the addition of a dmarc recods.

The lack of this record will ensure your email is placed straight into the Spam folder.

In case you don’t already have such a record, here are its details:

  • Type: TXT
  • Host: _dmarc
  • Value: v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:

rua=mailto: here you can add an email address which will receive dmarc reports for your domain. If don’t want to receive such reports, you can skip adding this part and the end value will look like this: v=DMARC1; p=none;

It’s important to make sure there is only one _dmarc record created for your domain. If there are multiple, this will prevent the MX record from being verified which by itself means some of the emails sent via the One-off or Automations may end up in the SPAM folder.

Please note, once all of the DNS records have been created, it can take up to 72 hours for all of them to propagate on all servers worldwide. You can keep checking their propagation both in Releva and via tools such as Google Toolbox and What’s My DNS.
