How to use Custom rules in Product Feeds?

3 min read

Adding Custom rules to your Product Feeds (regardless if it’s for Web or Email) can be extremely beneficial especially if you want to achieve something specific (like for example choosing the Product block to choose User’s Favourite Colour).

To make things easier, we recommend having two tabs open in your browser – one for your Product Feed and the other is for the Products page within Releva.

First, let’s focus on the Product Feed portion so we can prepare the setup. Open the Product Feed of your choice, navigate to tab ‘Boosts & Filters’ and at the bottom of the page you will see a button ‘Custom Rule’ – click on it.

Doing so will open a modal allowing you to select a product characteristic (the ones that are being synced with Releva) from your own Products and use it to further enhance the capabilities of the Product Feed. Once you’ve selected the product characteristic, make sure to click ‘Save Changes’.

You can add as many Custom rules as you wish until you are happy with the end result.

Now that you have added the Custom rule(s) you want, it’s time to make sure they are set up properly. Similarly to the default Filters (you can read more on them here – How to create a new Product Feed?), for the custom ones you also have the same options:

  • off – this filter is switched off
  • Boost – can be used to boost the specific filter and show more products that fit the criteria, you can also adjust the weight for this component
  • Bury – shows fewer products that fit the criteria of the filter and its’ weight can also be adjusted
  • Include – shows only products from this filter component
  • Exclude – doesn’t show products from this filter

Of course, each of the above tabs has their own options:

  • user’s favourite – the value of the filter is an aggregated value of the products that the user viewed or purchased; which means that the value for each profile will be dynamic and based on their preferences
  • manual – you can set up the static value(s) manually

Example:

If you want the product feed to show more products from customers’ preferred color. You can see the example below:

  1. Click on the Custom Rule button
  2. Search or find the Color field from the drop-down menu (if the same is available for your own products)
  3. Save the Changes
  4. Boost the Color from the user’s favorite with weight
    • The weight of this boost can be adjusted from 1 to 10

Getting the Custom data from your Products #

This is where the second tab will play a role. Open a product which you would like to use to copy a particular characteristic.

On the right side you will see a field with Custom raw data – this is the data you can use to further enhance the functionality of the Product Feeds to fit your needs.

Let’s just say that I want to Boost the items that have tag ‘Backpacks’ with this feed. What I need to do is locate the tag and copy the whole string “Backpacks“ (as shown below):

This is what a typical product looks like after being synchronised in Releva

After the string is copied, it’s time to return to the first tab with our Product Feed and navigate to tab ‘Boosts & Filtes’ (if you aren’t there already). At the bottom, make sure the correct Custom rule is added (in this case it’s ‘tags’), I choose Boost (as I want products with this tag to be boosted at the very front), choose Manual (as I want to specify a particular string) and in the empty field below I paste the value we copied from the Products page.

Warning: The strings are case sensitive so they need to be typed in as they’re synced with Releva. Also, make sure the quotes are not present

Adding Multiple strings in a field #

If you wish, you also have the option to add multiple strings into a single Custom rule. This can be beneficial for the times when you want to include multiple brands, tags or any of your own products’ characteristics into a single Product feed.

All you need to do to achieve this is to separate each string with the symbol | (similar to the picture below).

If you add multiple strings for a Custom rule, make sure there are no spaces anywhere.

You can do similar things with the rest of your products’ characteristics – from Manually limiting the product feed to display only items from a certain Category level, display user’s favourite colour or size to anything your products have as custom data synced with us.

After you have added the custom rules you need, don’t forget to click on the Save button at the bottom right corner.
