Anonymous visitor

An anonymous visitor is someone on your site or in your app who has not logged in, signed up or given an email. Most visitors are anonymous for most of their visits, and most tools cannot act on them.

What it means

Email tools, loyalty programs and most retention flows only start once a shopper is identified. Everyone else browses, leaves and hears nothing. Yet the anonymous visitor is the same person who may sign up next week, and everything she does before that is useful: the ad that brought her, the products she viewed, the search she typed.

Why it matters for a store

Email reaches under 1 in 10 visitors, by the figures on our Why one agent page, and only those who gave an address and consent. A store that waits for the login acts on a small minority. A store that gives every visitor a profile from the first interaction can personalize the page, the search and the banners for everyone, and when she signs up, the history is already there.

An example

A visitor arrives from an Instagram ad, views three pairs of boots in size 38 and leaves. She has no account. Two days later she comes back from a Google search on the same phone. The agent recognizes the profile, ranks size 38 first and shows the boots she viewed. When she buys and enters her email, the order joins the same profile.

How the agent uses it

The sales agent works for anonymous visitors on every page: search, recommendations and banners need no login. Every interaction joins one profile, which retention uses the moment she becomes reachable.
